Studio Printworks is honored to produce and make available “Maiden & Moonflower” by the renowned American artist Kiki Smith. The hand-screened wallpaper was created for her show, Kiki Smith: Her Home, at the Museum Haus Esters in Krefeld, Germany, March 16 through August 24, 2008.
“Maiden & Moonflower” depicts an evening scene. A woman stands beneath a tree bough inhabited by night creatures and surrounded by stars. It addresses spiritual and eternal aspects of human nature, our connection to the universe, yet our solitary journey.
The technique calls to mind 14th-century German woodcut patterns, but in Smith’s inimitable drawing style. Not only did she provide the design, she actually traced it onto the acetate for the production of the screens. It is thus produced in the actual hand of the artist.
Smith’s collaboration with Studio Printworks exemplifies the cross-over of fine artists into the decorative arts world in the tradition of Berard, Dufy and Picasso.
Kiki Smith is an artist of international prominence whose career has spanned over three decades. Her work has been shown in numerous one-person exhibitions including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. She holds the Athena Award from the Rhode Island School of Design for excellence in printmaking. Smith’s work can be seen in public collections around the world.
